Classic Two – M5 Construction Released!

Hi everyone!

It’s time to publish a new loudspeaker design!

My last published design was the small Prestigious Two – M1 DXT. With its 4.7 liter enclosure it was one of the smallest designs I’ve done, but this time I release a loudspeaker on the other side of the scale.

With a 27 liter enclosure the Classic Two – M5 is on the verge of being too big for a stand-mount loudspeaker, but luckily, if desired it can be converted to a small floorstanding loudspeaker.

The ScanSpeak drivers from the Classic line are really nice driver units and even though they are old constructions they are still very nice sounding and I’m very pleased with results using them in the Classic Two – M5 loudspeaker.

Summer Project!

The summer project!

A friend of mine, has upgraded his NHT loudspeakers to the 2.9 model and he’s kindly lending me his old NHT 2.5i loudspeaker for a loudspeaker review!

Expect a similar review like the Wharfedale Diamond 10.2. I will dissect the loudspeaker paired with a lot of measurements and perhaps some suggestions on how to improve the loudspeaker.

It will be interesting too see how a 17 year old loudspeaker design will measure up to today’s standards and how it has survived many years of use.

Construction Update!

Hi Everyone,

It’s time for an update of a new loudspeaker design, soon to be published.

The last loudspeaker design I published was the small Excellence Two – M1 DXT . I urge anyone who owns a pair of SEAS Excel W12 mid-woofers to build it. It has some very impressive performance for its size of only 4.7 liters.

Oh no, some will say, not another 2-way stand-mount! Sorry, but I just love 2-way stand-mount loudspeakers.

This new Classic Two – M5 loudspeaker design is rather large (27 liters), so it can actually quite easily be converted to a small floorstander, if one so wishes.

It uses two driver units from the ScanSpeak “Classic” line. The new and updated  mid-woofer 18W/8545-01 and the tweeter D2905/950000. These two drivers are used in many commercial designs and I can see why. They are some really good sounding drivers and I’m really pleased with the result.

Some fine tuning and some final measurements are left to do and of course, finding the time to publish it!

Prestigious Two – M1 DXT Construction Released!

Hi everyone!

The Prestigious Two – M1 DXT is the sibling to the Excellence Two – M1 DXT, but costs about 280$ less. It share many qualities with the Excellence Two – M1 DXT, but  doesn’t have the same incredible bass performance and extremely low distortion profile as the Excellence Two – M1 DXT.

Instead it has a more lively mid-range presentation compared to the more neutral warm sounding Excellence Two – M1 DXT.

This was the last mini monitor for a while and I promise that the next loudspeaker to be published will be a “lot” bigger loudspeaker!

It has been a while since the last published loudspeaker design and the Excellence Two – M1 DXT has actually been ready for a while, but unfortunately I simply haven’t had the time to publish it.

If you search for a bedroom or small room loudspeaker with an amazing bass performance, look no further. This is a low distortion bass capable small loudspeaker with a sound larger than its appearance.

This loudspeaker replaces the older published Excellence Two – Mini Monitor design, which is moved to the archive section.

4,5″ Driver Measurements!

I’ve added measurements for the SEAS CA12RCY and the W12CY003 to the mid-woofer measurement section.

The measurements speak for themselves, but here are some comments about them:

Despite their small size they all need a rather low cross-over frequency in order to work properly. Especially the hard cone versions L12RCY/P and the W12CY001 ideally needs a cross-over point of about 2kHz in combination with notch filters in order to deal with the large cone break-up modes and their distortion profiles. For its size the W12CY001 have amazing bass capabilities.

The coated paper cone CA12RCY also have a raising distortion profile in the upper mid-range at higher listening levels, despite its rather smooth frequency response. This mid-woofer would also work better with a cross-over point of about 2kHz.

The Nextel cone W12CY003 mid-woofer can be used higher up in frequency, but have a rather high resonance frequency and it has some resonance and distortion issues at 950Hz, which might limit its usability.

Construction updates!

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I’ve published any new designs, but rest assured, there are several coming in the near future!

Here are some of the upcoming new loudspeaker designs:

“Sequence Three – Grand Reference”:

 

This is a design I’ve worked on for quite a while and for a long time it was put on hold, but I picked it up again in the beginning of this year. I almost have lost count of how many cross-over versions I’ve tested, but I think this 8th version and second baffle version will be the final one.

I think this is one of the best speakers I’ve built, if not the best. It’s addictive to listen to this speaker. Everything just falls in place. The treble is the most natural I’ve heard, very effortless and detailed, yet without any harshness.  The RAAL Ribbon is truly amazing and its sound character isn’t like anything else I’ve heard. As soon as you go back and listen to a dome tweeter design, even high end ones, none come close to the RAAL’s natural and effortless sound.

With that said, it also have some limitations e.g. it sounds the best from 3kHz and up with a LR4 topology. It also has a narrower vertical listening sweet spot compared to a dome tweeter even though the RAAL Ribbon with its foam pads is better than most tall ribbons. With this in mind and properly used, they are simply stunning.

I know this statement is like throwing gasoline on fire in the DIY community as it seems that RAAL ribbons have divided people into two camps. Those who loves it and those who thinks they are expensive and overrated. Yes, they are very expensive, but I think that the people who are against it, either haven’t listened to the RAAL’s or haven’t listened to them in a properly deigned loudspeaker.

The Audio Technology 15H 52 12 06 SDKM mid-range works very well together with the RAAL as it match both in resolution and speed to the RAAL ribbon character. In fact, as does the Audio Technology 10C 77 25 10 KAP woofer. This loudspeaker is fast with very nice micro dynamics and they don’t need much power to bloom out. This is a speaker that can be listened to at low listening levels and still be enjoyable.

There are still some fine tuning to do before final measurements and publishing, e.g. voicing mid and tweeter levels.

“Satori Two – Monitor BE”:

 

As with the Sequence Three – Grand Reference, this design has been prototyped in many cross-over versions and I’m still evaluating if the 5th or 6th version will be the final published one. At the moment the 6th version is the favorite one, simply because its tweeter cross-over section is so simple in its construction and e.g. doesn’t need a resistor in series with the driver unit to attenuate the tweeter level.

I’m still struggling to decide which of the version that sounds the best. It might result in two cross-over versions to be published and where the reader can decide by themselves, which one to choose.

“Excellence Two – Mini Monitor DXT” and “Prestigious Two – Mini Monitor DXT”:

 

These two designs are finished, but I need to find the time to do the write up and publishing.

This is a small SEAS 4.5” design using the famous DXT tweeter and I must say that these designs are the most successful ones using the DXT tweeter I’ve done so far. The Excellence Two – Mini Monitor DXT is the high end version of the two and it’s something special. It’s very low distorting and has a powerful bass despite its small size.

There will also be more driver unit measurements later this year and some more designs like a small floor standing 2-way, a large 2-way stand mount as well as some designs with a more moderate price tag.

Hifi Show Report!

This year it was interesting to see that 95% of the exhibitors used computer or streaming based music sources. I do think it’s the future and I’ve personally used it for years.

ScanSpeak 18W/4531 Measurements!

This time on the test bench we have the ScanSpeak 18W/4531 mid-woofer from the ”Revelator” series.

The two tested driver units are the 18W/4531-00 and the 18W/4531-01.

What’s the difference between the -00 and the -01 version?

 

These two mid-woofers are very similar and the main difference is the cone material used. The -00 version uses a sliced paper cone and where the slices are filled with damping glue. The -01 version uses a similar sliced paper cone, but the paper cone is also mixed with wood fibers, hence the slightly grayer color of the cone.

Both versions have a 38mm voice-coil, but the -01 version has a slightly taller (0.5mm) voice-coil compared to the -00 version. In all other aspects e.g. magnet size etc. they are identical and even though the official specification indicates that the -01 version has a slightly larger cone area of the two (157cm2 v.s. 150cm2), it has the same cone area as the -00 version.

 

Impedance:

The impedance wrinkle around 800Hz is a bit more pronounced for the -01 version compared to the -00 version. Besides that the impedance plot is virtually identical between the two versions.

 

Frequency:

Both versions have an extended frequency response and a very smooth frequency roll-off without any nasty cone break-ups.

The -00 version has a smoother frequency response around 800Hz (where the impedance wrinkle is) compared to the -01 version. It also has a slightly more extended frequency response.

The -01 version on the other hand has a slightly smoother frequency response in the 2-6kHz range compared to the -00 version.

They are both outstanding frequency response performers compared to just about any 7” mid-woofers in the market.

 

Distortion:

Both versions have a very low odd-order distortion profile, but both also have an elevated second-order distortion profile in the 0,4-1,2kHz area.

Sum-up:

 

Both the -00 and the -01 version are top performers and any of them can be chosen from a performance perspective. Most likely they can also be a drop in replacement to each other in many designs and it’s more a matter of price and availability, which one to choose. I personally think the less common -01 version with its wood fiber cone looks interesting.
